It is crucial to the understanding of compassion to realise that it is not simply an adjective one puts on in relation to the Buddhist path of meditation, but something that requires introspection. It requires tremendous courage, contemplation, and insight into human nature—into one’s own capacities, and into the power of causes and conditions one creates, which shape one’s own life and the lives of others.
